Study Shows Narafilcon B Elicits Comparable Ocular Response as the Highest DK/T Soft Lens, Non-Contact Lens Wear

1-DAY ACUVUE TruEye Brand Contact Lenses (narafilcon B) were found to allow open-eye physiological conditions comparable to the soft lens with the highest Dk/t as well as to non-contact lens wear, new research shows. 1-DAY ACUVUE TruEye Brand also outperformed a standard hydrogel lens.

In addition, 1-DAY ACUVUE TruEye performed exceptionally well in terms of comfort and was rated as being as comfortable as wearing no lens at all.  These findings were presented recently at The American Academy of Optometry meeting.

About the Study

The study was a prospective, repeated-measures, partially-masked, randomized, controlled, eight-hour trial.  Twenty-two subjects presented for four separate treatment sessions during which they wore their habitual spectacles or contact lenses made from narafilcon B, lotrafilcon A (Focus Night & Day, CIBA Vision) or polymacon (SofLens 38, Bausch + Lomb) for eight hours.  Objective corneal thickness measures, taken with both Haag-Streit OCLR pachymetry and Orbscan, and redness gradings (0-4 scale) were obtained at least two hours after awakening prior to treatment and then after eight hours of open-eye contact lens or spectacle wear.  Comfort was assessed on 1-100 visual analog scales after treatment completion.

Haag-Streit OCLR pachymetry showed that the cornea thinned (mean ± SE % swelling) slightly over the wear period with narafilcon B (-0.99 ± 0.18), lotrafilcon A (-1.02 ± 0.23) and spectacle wear (-0.35 ± 0.15) but swelled with polymacon (+0.75 ± 0.21).  The pattern was similar for peripheral corneal swelling (3mm from the central cornea) as measured with the Orbscan.  Limbal redness grading decreased slightly for narafilcon B (-0.04 ± 0.05) and spectacle wear (-0.03 ± 0.06), and increased slightly for lotrafilcon A (0.13 ± 0.08) and substantially for polymacon (+0.64 ± 0.10).  Bulbar conjunctival redness showed a similar pattern.  Mean (± SD) comfort with narafilcon B (96.1 ± 1.0) was similar to spectacle wear (96.1 ± 1.3) but much better than with lotrafilcon A (80.7 ± 4.4) and polymacon (78.3 ± 5.1).

“These findings demonstrate that the oxygen transmissibility of 1-DAY ACUVUE TruEye is more than sufficient for open-eye wear and provides comparable corneal swelling and conjunctival redness to the highest Dk/t lens and to wearing no lens at all,” says Noel Brennan, MScOptom, PhD, FAAO, Coles Brennan Consultants Pty Ltd, Melbourne Australia, and study co-author.  “The narafilcon B material offers wearers a near ‘no lens’ experience, keeping eyes looking white and healthy and comfortable throughout the day.”

The study was sponsored by VISTAKON,  Division of Johnson & Johnson Vision Care, Inc., marketer of 1-DAY ACUVUE TruEye.
