IOPtima Launches LIPITEAR Phospholipid Microemulsion for Ophthalmic Use
IOPtima announced the launch of LIPITEAR, a microemulsion formed by an aqueous phase and a lipidic phase that helps to restore the proper microenvironment of the ocular surface, enhances the physiological process of corneal re-epithelization following ocular surgery, and reduces the typical symptoms and signs of ocular surface disorder (OSD).
OSD encompasses different types of diseases related to damage of the surface of the cornea, including dry eye syndrome, typical symptoms after ocular surgery, and corneal erosions. OSD can severely affect eyesight and quality of life. Symptoms may include blurry vision, discomfort or pain, redness and itching, and in severe cases, blindness due to corneal scarring.
The alteration of the lipid layer results in evaporation of the aqueous layer, which in turn leads to reduced nourishing factors, alteration of epithelial cell activity and replication and hyperosmolarity that causes goblet cell death and reduction in corneal glycogen. Irregular lipid layer also causes optical aberrations clinically, resulting in a reduction of visual acuity and general quality of vision. Reduced lubricant power can lead to irritation, heavy/swollen eyelids and foreign body sensation as well.
Therefore, in the treatment of OSD, the therapeutic goal should be to support reparative processes and relieve symptoms. Whereas many treatments for OSD are mainly water-based artificial tears supplemented with variety of viscose substances, LIPITEAR offers a formula that most closely mirrors the natural tear film and can restore both the aqueous and the protective lipid layer of the tear film, according to a company news release.
Use of the LIPITEAR formula results in:
- A restored proper microenvironment on the ocular surface
- An enhanced, uniform physiological process of corneal re-epithelialization following ocular surgery
- The reduction of pain/burning sensation, blurred vision, foreign body sensation, photophobia and lacrimation
This indicates a preferred usage after ocular surgery (e.g. refractive surgery, cataract surgery and corneal transplant), as well as for traumatic and spontaneous corneal erosions and dry eye syndrome.
