SightLife Board of Directors Appoints Claire Bonilla as CEO
The board of directors for SightLife has appointed Claire Bonilla as Chief Executive Officer, effective August 21, 2017. Ms. Bonilla, who has served as SightLife’s Chief Global Officer since April 2015, also will join SightLife’s board.
“The board believes Claire has the talent, business savvy and interpersonal skills to lead SightLife into its next chapter, as proven by the 60 percent growth she has driven in expanding SightLife’s work to end corneal blindness in developing countries,” SightLife Board Chair Melody Summers said in a company news release. “SightLife and SightLife Surgical’s joint mission to end corneal blindness by 2040 will be best served by having separate CEOs to focus on their respective roles serving those in need.”
Ms. Bonilla is a prominent expert in global eye bank development, speaking at many conferences and events on the success of SightLife’s Global Programs. Using business acumen developed in the corporate world, she developed strategies to grow capacity an average of 25 percent in over 30 eye banks in developing countries, train over 300 surgeons, and ensure sight-restoring surgery to over 45,000 individuals, since being appointed Chief Global Officer in 2015.
SightLife recently launched SightLife Surgical, a for-profit arm of SightLife that is committed to transforming the cornea ecosystem by enabling innovation and access to treatments for corneal blindness. Monty Montoya, who has been SightLife’s CEO since 2003, will remain president and CEO of SightLife Surgical. “We have very ambitious plans for SightLife Surgical and I am eager to focus on rapid innovation and discoveries that will benefit the global cornea ecosystem to help us achieve our social mission,” said Monty.
“I look forward to enhancing and expanding SightLife’s outstanding service to the cornea community – from those who generously donate the gift of sight and their families, to patients, surgeons and the support system necessary for corneal transplantation,” said Ms. Bonilla.
Prior to joining SightLife, Ms. Bonilla spent nearly 2 decades managing a variety of global functions for software giant Microsoft, most recently leading its Humanitarian Assistance & Disaster Response business. She also has served as a consultant to Fortune 500 companies.
