IOPtima Launches iLid CO2 Laser-Assisted Blepharoplasty Kit

IOPtima announced the launch of the iLid CO2 laser kit to enable oculoplastic surgeons to perform safe, effective CO2 laser-assisted blepharoplasty, a cosmetic procedure that corrects defects, deformities, and disfigurations of the eyelids, according to a company news release. Blepharoplasty can be performed manually with a surgical scalpel; the iLid CO2 laser kit facilitates use of a CO2 laser beam instead.

With the excision and removal and/or repositioning of excess tissues, as well as reinforcement muscle and tendon tissues, the blepharoplasty procedure is used to treat:

•    Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelids, sometimes impairing vision
•    Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the eyelids
•    Bags under the eyes
•    Drooping lower eyelids that reveal white below the iris
•    Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelids

Using the iLid CO2 laser kit instead of a manual surgical scalpel, surgeons employ a CO2 laser beam with adjustable levels of penetration to incise the upper and lower eyelids and remove excess fat. The CO2 laser beam also carefully vaporizes (peels) the top layer of the skin, restoring its surface and finely smoothing the lid. Advantages iLid CO2 laser-assisted blepharoplasty surgery over older scalpel techniques include:

•    No skin incision in the lower eyelid, eliminating any potential dragging down of the lower eyelid
•    Minimal bruising, swelling, pain and discomfort
•    Shorter recovery period
•    Less intraoperative bleeding as the laser seals blood vessels as it cuts, eliminating small subcutaneous and intramuscular hematomas
•    Dramatically reduced procedure time
•    Better cosmetic results with no visible scars

The iLid CO2 laser-assisted blepharoplasty kit is based on IOPtima’s IOPtiMate system for performing CLASS (CO2 laser-assisted sclerectomy surgery) for treatment of glaucoma.
