Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is more sensitive than visual field (VF) testing at detecting progression in early glaucoma, new research reports. "Our multi-center Advanced Imaging for Glaucoma study confirmed that the overall average peripapillary nerve fiber layer thickness as measured by OCT was more sensitive than VF parameters in detecting disease progression in the early stages of glaucoma," senior author Dr. David Huang of the Casey Eye Institute at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland told Reuters Health.
