Ellex to Broadcast ABiC Surgery Event Live From Dean McGee Eye Institute

Ellex Medical will host a live online broadcast of its minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) procedure ABiC (ab interno canaloplasty) on Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at the Dean McGee Eye Institute, University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City.

The live surgery event will allow viewers worldwide to watch renowned glaucoma specialist Mahmoud A. Khaimi, MD, perform two cases of ABiC, a comprehensive ab-interno MIGS procedure that opens up the natural outflow channels to restore normal aqueous flow in the treatment of glaucoma.

The Procedure

Based on the same principles as angioplasty, ABiC uses microcatheter technology to enlarge the eye’s natural drainage system, improving outflow and lowering eye pressure – without damaging tissue or leaving behind a stent or shunt. The procedure, which utilizes Ellex’s proprietary iTrack microcatheter, targets all sites of potential outflow resistance, including Schlemm’s canal, the collector channels and the trabecular meshwork.

Dr Khaimi’s 12-month analysis of the procedure’s efficacy in primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) patients, both as a standalone procedure and in conjunction with cataract surgery, has shown that ABiC achieves, on average, a 30% reduction in mean IOP and a 50% reduction in medication burden.

The Surgeon

Dr. Khaimi is a Clinical Associate Professor at the Dean McGee Eye Institute. He completed his ophthalmology residency at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit before undertaking a fellowship in glaucoma at the Dean McGee Eye Institute, where he later joined the faculty in 2007. A pioneer of the ABiC procedure, Dr. Khaimi is recognized nationally and internationally and is considered to be a world authority on canal-based surgery.

“ABiC offers multiple advantages: having an excellent safety profile; being fast and easy to perform without the need for a permanent implant or stent; being minimally invasive with no manipulation of the conjunctiva; and, based on 12-month data, having proven efficacy when performed as a standalone procedure, and in conjunction with cataract surgery. It is also important to note that ABiC acts to restore the natural outflow system, rather than bypass it,” Dr. Khaimi said in a news release.

“ABiC has a significantly lower risk profile than traditional surgical alternatives and offers quicker recovery for patients, allowing them to return to normal daily activities almost immediately following the procedure. Indeed, my patients have been amazed that the postoperative course for ABiC is simpler than cataract surgery," he added.

Dr. Khaimi will be sharing his surgical pearls and clinical tips, including how to correctly place the iTrack microcatheter, during the live surgery broadcast.
