Changes in pattern electroretinogram (PERG) and other measures associated with head-down-body-tilt (HDT) position predict future loss of optic nerve tissue in individuals at risk for glaucoma, according to a pilot study. "Posture-induced abnormalities in PERG, intraocular pressure (IOP), and systemic blood pressure should be able to stratify patients with suspicion of glaucoma in categories of risk based on susceptibility to stress and potentiate current risk assessment, which is based on a combination of known risk factors for glaucoma,” Dr. Vittorio Porciatti from the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine told Reuters Health by email.
