Patients whose surgeons have high numbers of patient complaints are at increased risk for postoperative complications compared with those whose surgeons have fewer patient complaints, according to a study published online February 15 in JAMA Surgery. "Efforts to promote patient safety and address the risk of malpractice claims should continue to focus on surgeons' ability to communicate respectfully and effectively with patients and other medical professionals," write William O. Cooper, MD, MPH, from Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee, and colleagues.
